The department was established in February 1981 as the "Informatics" sector within the Center for Mathematics, which has the rank of faculty at VIMMESS. It consists of 5 people:
• Ch. assistant professor Marko Todorov, PhD – supervisor;
• Associate Professor Varban Iliev, PhD;
• Ch. assistant Nikolay Raikov;
• senior assistant Biser Mandzharov;
• senior assistant Aneta Savova.
During the period 1985 - 1987, new members entered the sector, after which the staff numbered 14 teachers, a technical contractor and an organizer of educational activities.
In 1994, the Center for Mathematics was included in the newly created Faculty of Education and the sectors were transformed into departments.
In 1998, the department was renamed the "Informatics and Information Technologies" department in order to more fully match the name of the department with the subject of its activity.
From the creation of the department to the present moment, more than 40 people have worked as teachers, and 10 as system administrators.
The current teaching staff is:
• 1 professor;
• 6 associate professor;
• 7 main assistants;
• 1 assistant.
As of March 2020, 12 doctoral students are being trained at the department in full-time and part-time study.
